Fate Versus Destiny
People speak of fate and destiny as though they are the same thing—two names for a road that was chosen before we ever arrived. I have never believed that. Fate is the knock at the door. Destiny is what happens after we decide to answer.
Some encounters enter our lives before we understand why they matter. A person appears, a conversation begins, or an ordinary afternoon suddenly carries the weight of something larger. We may call it coincidence because coincidence asks nothing from us. Meaning does.
Perhaps fate places us at the crossroads, but destiny requires participation. It asks us to notice, to choose, and sometimes to release what first awakened us. The path is not always the person, place, or promise we expected. Sometimes the path is the change that remains after everything else has gone.
The mystery may not be whether life is planned. The deeper mystery may be whether we are brave enough to recognize the invitation—and honest enough to decide what we will become because of it.
